Pain and spine.

Back and neck pain are among the most common reasons people miss work and stop doing what they enjoy. At Rehabify in Bengaluru, Dr. Dharshan N A, a physiatrist with a fellowship in interventional pain management, finds the likely source of the pain and builds a plan that starts with movement and, when suitable, adds image-guided procedures.

Medicines, activity changes and, when suitable, an image-guided injection.

  3. 03

    Restore movement

A graded exercise programme with a physiotherapist and at home.

  4. 04

Work set-up, lifting, sleep and fitness habits.

Questions

Before you book.

Short answers to what people ask most about pain and spine.

Do I need an MRI for back pain?

Most back pain does not need an MRI at first. Scans are useful when pain lasts beyond 4 to 6 weeks despite treatment, when there is weakness or numbness, or when warning signs are present. The doctor will tell you if you need one.

Is bed rest good for back pain?

Usually not. Short rest during a bad flare is fine, but staying active within comfort helps most people recover faster. The doctor will show you which movements are safe.

What does a pain physician do that other doctors do not?

A physiatrist trained in interventional pain management can target the exact source of pain with image-guided injections or nerve blocks, and combine this with rehab so the benefit lasts.

Can neck pain cause headaches?

Yes. Problems in the upper neck can cause headaches felt at the back of the head or behind the eyes. These often improve with posture work and targeted exercise.

Will I need surgery?

Most people with back or neck pain do not. If there are signs that surgery may help, the doctor will explain why and refer you to a spine surgeon of your choice.
